Or rather, taken-through-my-new-sunglasses-of-10-lira-groovyness :D Hurrah for ferries; we went over to get all doctored up today, but turns we must abstain from all foods before bloodwork...so we'll all get sticked tomorrow instead.
It was worth it though for these glasses. The world looks like it's gotten cross-processed!

1 a day

. . . like vitamins! Be preparamundo, for I shall be attempting to post one daily-life in Izmir photo every day till we depart, not including internet-less periods. It is to be a celebration of the beauty of the everyday, the mundane. As Plath says, A certain minor light may still /Lean incandescent /Out of kitchen table or chair. That's "Black Rook in Rainy Weather". Remember the "sweetly ordinary"? That is what this project is about.

We begin:

May 27 - Ivanhoe

edit:

Ahem.

I retract my former statement about Izmir dogs being lethargic and unfriendly. I very much retract it.
Sarah and I went out walking and snapping together this eve and behold: PUPPIES of cuteness. This one kinda checked out the camera for a second and then waddled over and posed for me!

He is named Oliver. Due to his eye color and because he was the olive branch of peace between his race and mine. Or is it laurel branch? Either way, consider the statement retracted. :D

days 2 & 3 in fethiye

I've gotten behind in blogging the Fethiye/Oludeniz trip, what with all the excitement about Canon Unnamed. Day 2 we actually went into Fethiye proper. Highlights included: freshly squeezed carrot juice (for. . . Sarah); stumbling upon the best pide I've ever eaten; accidentally spying some Lycean tombs on our way to dinner! Sniffing our way around tiny cobbley lanes to get to said tombs. Getting to the foot of said tombs and not having to pay any touristy fees after dad conversed genially with the fee-collector guy. Sunset over Fethiye as seen from said tombs. Drive back home in the dark. Etc. :)

The area right at the foot of the tombs was like a venture into east Turkey...grandpas out smoking and covered grandmas without waddling across the cobblestone (!) road. The car barely made it through some of the narrower passages.

We parked right under this:

The tombs are odd. They're right up there near Fethiye; I was looking up at a sign to cross the street or something when I caught sight of them. Hey guys, ancient-looking thingies!

So we went. And my pictures are all blurry. Sorry.

Up at the base of the tombs, turned around and this is what you see. Prolly my favorite picture of the day (which isn't saying much with this batch!).

Fethiye bay/iskele area where people try to sell you boat tours.

And for the refreshment of the eyes after all that, a few snippets from Canon Unnameable.

More Fethiye coming!

Saturday 22 May 2010

hurrah!

Providential thing #1 about Mr. Canon XS (Names Tyson, Frank, and Polyphemus are currently in the running. We are taking suggestions starting ... now) --

My parents' old camera that I've been a'hankering to try out just happens to be...
A Canon EOS Rebel XS SLR.
The exact same model in an old film version. HA. How incredible is that? Because they're the same model, both lenses work interchangeably!

Photobucket

So my kit lens is 18 - 55mm. And film camera's kit lens is 35-80mm...giving me a combined 18-80mm! And all salvaged from a near-antique which we happened to have lugged across continents for years and years. Ah life. :)

(I am also using Ms. Film Camera's strap, which is more worn and hence comfy.)

Random books-by-the-bed :) This kind of depth o' field is so easy now! Hurrah! Henry James, Kipling, Lewis, ???, Milne, and Elliot. Twice hurrah!

Let us not forget Harold Archimedes Kodak, who hath served most faithfully up until now, and will always be first in my tender affectionate memories. *applause*

P.S. Sarah got new glasses in the same delivery. Are they not fabulous?
