  4. Or perhaps the scarecrow is a symbol of the discontented and denigrated farm laborer who will yet come to power and authority! . . . Sheesh. Just been reading about how "The Wizard of Oz" was actually a political allegory for the battle of gold vs. silver standard in the 1890s. I wonder if I'll ever enjoy that book quite as much again. 'Course, it always lacked a certain edge of poignancy that good fairy tales should have.
